Report for Gathering XVIII

On Saturday October 28, 2023, about 55 eager individuals gathered at Trinity Grace Church, Toronto for SOCEM’s annual fall training conference. Gathering XVIII was the first in-person conference since the pandemic. Those that were present were enthusiastic about learning about ESL ministries and networking with one another.

After a brief devotional and worship time just before 9:00 a.m., participants went to their respective workshops of choice. There were 3 workshops to choose from for each workshop session, apart from the all-day “Getting Started in Teaching ESL” module for those who were new to the ministry. Participants learnt about the sounds of English, multi-level classes and an expanded view of newcomer ministry. A half-hour coffee break followed.

The second workshop session had workshops on grammar, using movies to teach, and the specifics of conversation classes. Much learning was taking place.

After that, all went to the sanctuary for a Plenary Panel session. Three panelists gave their perspectives on different areas of “Challenges in Starting up/Running an ESL Ministry”. We were joined by about 15 online for this hybrid session. At the end, there was some time for audience Q&A.

At lunchtime, participants gathered around tables in the fellowship hall. Warm and eager conversations took place amongst all in a relaxed atmosphere. Some enjoyed the catered sub/sandwich lunch and dessert. Many also took the opportunity to browse the display tables.

The third and final workshop session took place after the hour-long lunch and networking time. Participants learnt about teaching beginners, active listening, and ministering in shame-based cultures. The day ended at 2:30 p.m. with many feeling full from learning and interacting with each other.

Some feedback for the conference include: “Last time I came to a gathering, I was a student, awesome to come back as a certified teacher for great resources I can put to use right now;” “Panel had great tips and suggestions and interesting topic;” “great to get together for networking and encouragement.”
