SOCEM’s annual fall training conference, Gathering XIX, took place on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at Martin Grove Baptist Church in Etobicoke. Close to 50 gathered in-person for a day of equipping, networking and sharing together surrounding matters of ESL ministries.
After a brief devotional and worship time at the sanctuary, participants divided into different sub-groups to attend the workshops of their choice. Workshop sessions covered a wide variety of topics ranging from pronunciation and grammar, to using literature in teaching ESL and introduction of biblical curricula, to challenges immigrants face and helping students find jobs. After 2 workshop sessions separated by a coffee break, there was a plenary Keynote Address on “Heralds of His Kingdom: the Eternal Significance of Serving Newcomers and Refugees.” An extended lunch time provided ample opportunities for informal sharing and networking. The lunch room was buzzing with conversations while others visited the display tables. A final workshop in the afternoon concluded the day.
