9:05 — Beginners’ Track (all day; led by Colin Brewster and others; see attached schedule)
This track is for people who are thinking of getting involved in an ESL Ministry in their Church. They do not need to have had any teacher training prior to this time. Willingness to learn and a heart for people are the only prerequisites. They will be introduced to such topics as: Language Teaching and Learning Principles, Helping People improve their Speaking, How to manage a small Class, and How to Lead a Conversation Lesson. Participants will receive a CD Rom that includes over 150 tested Conversation Sheets for an ESL Ministry, and they will be trained how to use them.
9:05-10:30 — Non-Beginners’ Workshops (choose one of the following)
Workshop #1: “Integrating your program into your church and community: various topics”
Brian and his team will lead a discussion on various aspects of setting-up, marketing, and administering a church-based ESL program. Specific topics will include: sporadic attendance, promotion, best practices, building commitment and community within the ESL ministry team as well as strengthening and extending your church’s capacity to accept those students who are willing to come to church. You are encouraged to bring your concerns and questions.

Workshop #2: ““Using Videos with Intermediate to Advanced ESL Students”
Everybody loves a story! Short videos can be fun, lively and lay a foundation for conversation. Come and see!! “Using Videos in an (Intermediate) ESL Class”
Presenter: Pamela Cousins: Pam has a BRE and MTS from Tyndale College and Seminary, and a TESL Certificate. She has been teaching ESL for a number of years, and is currently teaching at Canada Christian College, Toronto.
Workshop #3: “Integrating the Bible with ESL”
This workshop will explore practical ways of using the Bible to teach the four facets of language including speaking, listening, reading and writing. The focus will be on taking the biblical content and using related grammar and life skills to augment the selected text. We hope some of the ideas presented will bring the Bible to life and help facilitators to see their ESL ministry as an evangelistic tool.
Presenters: Mary Hogan: has BA in Latin and MSW, TESL certificate and a member of TESL Ontario; coordinator of Evening and Daytime ESL at Bayview Glen Church; Intermediate ESL teacher; taught ESL adult Sunday School; writes curriculum for Bayview Glen’s ESL ministry; supply teaches ESL (all levels) for York Region District School Board; tutors English privately; assists other churches in starting an ESL program. And : Mary-Lou Hanna has BA from Messiah College in Pa. U.S.A.; Ontario Teacher Certificate in elementary education; took TESOL training at Tyndale University College and Seminary; leader of Daytime ESL at Bayview Glen Church; Intermediate ESL teacher; writes curriculum for Bayview Glen’s ESL ministry; participated in conversational English classes with medical staff in China; tutored English privately; assists other churches in starting an ESL program.
Workshop #4: “Did I say that right?” (Repeated by request from Gathering-I)
A discussion of the possibility of incorporating grammar teaching and practice into ESL conversation-based classes and some ideas for effective activities and conversation topics.
Presenter: Carol Blake: Carol graduated from University of Toronto in 1982 with a Masters Degree in Linguistics and a TESL Certificate. She taught EFL in Indonesia for 16 months, adult ESL for the Waterloo Region District School Board for a couple of years and taught in a church-based ESL class for one term. Carol has taught a basic course in TESOL at Emmanuel Bible College and also provided informal support and advice for students investigating TESL programs in existing church-based programs.

11:45-12:15 — ESL Cooperative Mission Statement: Presentation and Discussion

Presenter: Brian Seim and Team. Brian Seim is the Director of Culture Connexions, SIM Canada’s ministry that equips churches to reach the nations in their neighbourhoods. He coordinates 25 missionaries to work among the 205 nation groups who move to Canada annually. He is the author of “Canada’s New Harvest – Helping Churches Touch Newcomers,” and “Moved with Compassion.” Among his other current activities he is writing a third book on the stories, biblical foundations and practices of Intercultural Churches.

Workshop #7: “The ‘Literacy and Evangelism’ Approach to ESL: an Introduction”
Presenters: Mabel Wee and Paul Robinson, OBFF Ministers, pioneer both Literacy and ESL Ministries in small groups and churches. They establish foundational, total, ESL-ministry PACKAGES, using a progressive, user-friendly, bible-based curriculum for community outreach. Training workshops in BOTH Literacy & ESL methodologies, besides text books and tapes, are available.
Workshop #8: Discussion of “Introduction to the Socio-cultural Dimension of Language Learning” (this is an article made available last Gathering, and available again by request)
The theory behind “Why we really do need to be friends”; we will consider the implications for ESL programs.
Presenter: Tom McCormick. Tom has worked for about 10 years in ESL ministries in Toronto. Tom works with MissionPrep (www.missionprep.ca, language acquisition programs), and teaches part-time at Tyndale Seminary (Mission; Apologetics). Other involvements have included 30 years ministering in Nursing Homes, and mission experience in Peru, Papua New Guinea, Cameroon and India. He currently lives near Toronto and continues to be active in all these areas.
